さて、早速なんですが
とある有名なアメリカの歌には
こんな冒頭の歌詞が存在します。
First of all, one of the U.S. prominent songs has such part in the lyrics.
I’m gonna make a change for once in my life
It’s gonna feel real good, gonna make a difference, gonna make it right…
ファンの方ならすぐに気付いたでしょうが、
かのマイケル・ジャクソンの楽曲の中で
屈指の名曲（そして名ライブ曲）の一つとして数えられる
”Man In The Mirror”からの一節を引用しました。
His fan may notice what it is from immediately;
this song made by Michael Jackson,
is counted as the fabulous song (as well as in live performance):
“Man In The Mirror”.
そしてこの一節の中には、
日本人がふつうに英語を勉強していると
そのニュアンスを中々学んだり使ったりすることがない…
でも、実は「人生の本質」である言葉が存在します。
This song has a special part
that Japanese people rarely learn or use as usual,
and that is actually a ‘vital part’ of human lives.

It’s gonna feel real good, gonna make a difference, gonna make it right…
これですね。
Here it is.
「Make a difference」
アメリカ人の方々が、大好きな言い回しの一つです。
直訳してしまうと、「違いを作る」。
ですが、この違いは単なる「違い」ではありません。
どのような意味が込められているのでしょうか？
This is one of the expressions loved by American.
However, the ‘difference’ is not simply a ‘different’ point.
What does the difference really mean?
さて、この曲のサビでは
マイケルは次のように歌っています。
Well, in the main part,
Michael sings as following;
If you wanna make the world a better place
Take a look at yourself, and then make a changeもし世界をより良い場所に変えたいのなら、
まずは自分自身を見つめて、それから変えていくんだ
つまり、
世界を変えたいならまずは自分から変わらないといけない。
ここでは単に「変化する（チェンジ！）」という意味だけではなく、
「発展する・進化する・より良くしていく」というニュアンスで
この「Change」という表現が使われています。
It means that you must change at first to change the world.
Here, the ‘change’ does not only mean change
but also contains the meaning of ‘improvement’ and ‘evolution’.
さて、先ほどの歌詞冒頭に戻りましょう。
あえて上では日本語訳を載せませんでしたが、
今回は「Make a difference」以外の部分を
とりあえず見ていきましょう。
Then, let us go back to the first part.
I did not explain it in detailed Japanese for some reasons,
and therefore I will see the meaning this time (more than the ‘difference’ for now.)

より良い気分になれる
より「○○○」、正していこう・・・
先ほどのサビと照らし合わせて、
この「○○○」の本当の意味に気が付くでしょうか？
As you see both this part and the main,
now can you find the true meaning of ‘make a difference’?
この「変化」・この「違い」とは。
What is the ‘change’ and ‘difference’?
日々、進歩していく事という「変化」ですね。
それを作っていこう・良い方向に変えていこうという意味で
この”Difference“が使われています。
Day-by-day improvement; this is ‘change’ to which the ‘difference’ refers, making it better.
そして、この「違い」という言葉自体にも意味はありまして。
これまでの自分自身、そしてこれまでの常識とも違うもの。
つまり、ふつうの人と違うポイントを作っていく…
ユニークさ・オリジナルさ・差別化というメッセージを含んでいます。
Moreover, the ‘difference’ itself has the meaning as well/
It’s the difference from myself, and from past & current.
Making points different from others…:
uniqueness, originality, and distinction as the messages.
よくアメリカは「自由の国」と言われますが、
その自由が「創り出すモノ」の一つがこのユニークさです。
よく日本では統一化が美徳視される傾向がありますが、
アメリカでは「みんな違って、みんないい」なんですよね。
Usually, the U.S. is expressed as the ‘country of freedom’;
one of ‘what the freedom makes’ is the uniqueness.
In Japan uniformity is more likely to be common on the other hand,
but ‘everybody is different, everybody is fine’ in America.
よく考えてみてください。
もし、皆が‘difference’のない同じような人たちだったら？
Let’s think about this;
what if everybody has no ‘difference’ and they are same?
- 自分とはだれか？
Who am I? - 何が「自分らしさ」なのか？
What makes ‘my uniqueness’? - なぜ人ではなく「自分」なのか／自分ではなく「他人」なのか？
Why not others but ‘me’? / Why not me but ‘others’? - なぜ、自分がチャンスに恵まれる／恵まれないのか？
Why can / cannot I get amounts of opportunity?
こんな事ばっかり考えてしまいますよね？
特に、日本だとこんな感じで
「自分自身」を見失いやすいのですが。
You may think such things.
Especially in Japan, people tend to lose their identity.
自分という人生を歩んでいないばかりか、
「自分にしかないモノ」がないので
生きていく上で何もアピール出来ないんですよね。
仕事をするにしても、友達付き合いするにしても、
「自分にはコレがある！」という部分がないと
人って振り向いてくれませんよね。
Now You don’t live in you way in your life.
Moreover, you have no ‘what only you have’,
and therefore you can appeal noting to live.
For working, for friends…
Without ‘I have THIS!!’. no one would see you.
よくよく考えると、当たり前の話なんですが。
It should be super common.
「出る杭は打たれる」って、おかしくね？？
より良い方向に”Make a difference”してこーぜ！！
毎日一歩ずつ、人とは違う事・ユニークで素敵なコトを・・・！
